Flag Nails: Happy Birthday, America!

Arden: Happy July 4th, everyone!  Here are the patriotic nails I'm rocking today.

I started by painting my nails with two coats of OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls.  Then I added the red stripes using our Color Club red striper polish.  Next, I painted on Butter London Blagger using one of the flat brushes from our MASH nail art brush set.  And finally I added the white dots using a dotting tool.

These probably could've looked better if I'd used striping tape or spent a little more time making my white dots on the blue, but oh well.  And I'm actually pretty proud that they were 100% free-handed-- I think they look pretty good for being hand-drawn!

My one confession about these nails: I seriously messed up when I went to paint my left hand.  I realized that if I mirrored them (which is what I normally do for designs) then the flag wouldn't be right.  But I also didn't want to make the blue square come at the tips instead of the base.  I thought I had it figured out, and this is what I did:

Yep, I ended up accidentally mirroring them anyway!  Alas.  I realize now that what I should've done is put the blue on the other side of the base of the nail.  You live, you learn.  I wish there were more blogs out there that posted left hand pics so I could see what other people do when recreating a design on their opposite hand!

Also, I'm entering this manicure in a contest on Facebook, so if you'd be willing to help me win by "Liking" my picture here, that would be great!

  2. You have a steady hand! ... for some reason I have lumpy thumbs and when I try to freehand stripes they ripple. HA! Something about being sick and one point? I'm not too concerned about it.

But your nails look great, and the stripes are perfect ^^ and your knot ring is ze shiz. Way to celebrate in style!
